The word “Angola” derives from the title used by the rulers of the Ndongo state. The title ngola was first mentioned in Portuguese writings in the sixteenth century. A Portuguese colony founded on the coast in also came to be known as Angola. At the end of the nineteenth century, the name was given to a much larger territory that was envisaged to come under Portuguese influence. These plans materialized slowly; not until the beginning of the twentieth century did Portuguese colonialism reach the borders of present-day Angola. Later the “Popular” was dropped. Angola may not classify as either a country or a culture. Since , war has destroyed cultural institutions, forced people to flee, and divided the territory between the belligerent. Thus one cannot speak of a single national culture.

The African Transition Zone cuts across the southern edge of the Sahara Desert at the widest portion of the continent. The realm can be further broken down into regional components: Maps vary in terms of which countries are included in each region, but this general geographic breakdown is helpful in identifying country locations and characteristics.
Madagascar is a large island off the southeastern coast of Africa and is usually not included with the other regions because its geographic qualities and biodiversity are quite different from the mainland. The continent of Africa is surrounded by salt water. The Indian Ocean borders it on the east, and the Atlantic is on the west. The continent of Africa has a number of small island groups that are associated with the realm and are independent countries.
Approximately miles off the coast of West Africa in the North Atlantic are ten islands that make up the independent country of Cape Verde. The small country of Equatorial Guinea also includes an island off the coast of Cameroon where its capital is located. Three island groups in the Indian Ocean around Madagascar include the independent countries of the Seychelles, Comoros, and Mauritius.

Early history[ edit ] Tunis was originally a Berber settlement. Tunis was one of the first towns in the region to fall under Carthaginian control, and in the centuries that followed Tunis was mentioned in the military histories associated with Carthage. Compared to the ancient ruins of Carthage, the ruins of ancient Tunis are not as large. Both Tunis and Carthage were destroyed; Tunis, however, was rebuilt first under the rule of Augustus and became an important town under Roman control and the center of a booming agricultural industry.
The city is mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana as Thuni.

An artist herself, in the early s Zukas was a friend to many artists in Zambia including William Bwalya Miko, who remembers with fondness how Zukas would return from trips abroad with cases full of art materials to pass on to local artists who had no access to such tools. In , she came into an inheritance and decided it was time to support artists more substantially, and the Lechwe Trust was born.
Their aim was to provide bursaries for artists who wished to study formally or attend art workshops and residencies. In addition, they decided to start a collection, ensuring an art legacy for Zambia. The collection houses works predominantly by Zambians, however there are works by those who have lived in Zambia or have a connection with the country. Now numbering over pieces of art from paintings to sculpture, from etchings to sketches the legacy is one of which Zambians should be proud, and yet few know of its existence.
Or at least that was the case until the recent exhibition. A lack of promotion of the art scene in Zambia is only one issue artists have to address. With Henry Tayali’s seminal painting “Destiny” — , writ large is the struggle for identity in a time of progress. In the foreground a myriad of figures scramble and work, carrying iron girders, spades, while they are seemingly penned in by a huge, steam obscured modern city.
The city itself is painted in muted greys, browns, mauves however the crowd is dressed in bright colours. According to the catalogue for the exhibition and an article by local magazine The Lowdown, this painting has had a long and well-travelled life. In , Tayali went to the now independent Zimbabwe to but his painting back.
Africa Continent Information and Tourism The planet’s second-largest and second-most densely populated continent, Africa is currently called home by more than one billion people, which equates to roughly 12 percent of the global population. In Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is a record-breaking free-standing mountain and features no less than three volcanic cones. At the other end of the scale, Lake Assal in Djibouti is actually the lowest point in the whole of Africa, while the sweeping sand dunes of the Sahara Desert offer something completely different.
Known for its diamond mines and extensive gold resources, Africa also offers some epic tourist magnets, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt , which is actually one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. South Africa is another popular country and is where you will encounter the famous Table Mountain at Cape Town and a multitude of soaring skyscrapers in the modern metropolis of Johannesburg. Many visitors choose to volunteer in Africa as part of an international project, giving their time freely to teach, improve human rights and carry out much-needed conservation work.
