Sir James Munby said the new courts would separate the process of divorce from financial claims, which can involve millions of pounds and take several years to resolve. Financial remedies courts will be launched in three areas from February next year, allowing cases where there are disputes over money to be heard in a different court from more common cases which do not involve a battle over finances.
While not all financial claims are of such a high value, experts said the change would speed the system up for both types of divorce. Figures released by the Ministry of Justice show that the average number of weeks it takes for a case to get to a decree absolute – the final stage – has risen from 42 in to almost 49 last year. The shift has been prompted by administrative delays which the courts have tried to resolve by centralising the system in divorce centres.
In to 11 of these were created , and legal advisers were given the power to deal with cases which did not involve financial settlements. There are hopes that the new process will reduce delays and inefficiencies caused by courts hearing many different types of cases, including complex financial disputes which take up a lot of court time.

Renaissance Turret Clock, German, circa Spring driven Matthew Norman carriage clock with winding key Clockmakers developed their art in various ways. Building smaller clocks was a technical challenge, as was improving accuracy and reliability. Clocks could be impressive showpieces to demonstrate skilled craftsmanship, or less expensive, mass-produced items for domestic use. The escapement in particular was an important factor affecting the clock’s accuracy, so many different mechanisms were tried.
Spring-driven clocks appeared during the 15th century, although they are often erroneously credited to Nuremberg watchmaker Peter Henlein or Henle, or Hele around This resulted in the invention of the stackfreed and the fusee in the 15th century, and many other innovations, down to the invention of the modern going barrel in Early clock dials did not indicate minutes and seconds.
A clock with a dial indicating minutes was illustrated in a manuscript by Paulus Almanus, and some 15th-century clocks in Germany indicated minutes and seconds. Some of the more basic table clocks have only one time-keeping hand, with the dial between the hour markers being divided into four equal parts making the clocks readable to the nearest 15 minutes.
Other clocks were exhibitions of craftsmanship and skill, incorporating astronomical indicators and musical movements. The next development in accuracy occurred after with the invention of the pendulum clock. Galileo had the idea to use a swinging bob to regulate the motion of a time-telling device earlier in the 17th century. Christiaan Huygens , however, is usually credited as the inventor.

Was the LMS too big? Frederic Stansfield In his reply to my earlier letter about the size of the LMS September issue , Doug Landau November issue makes many interesting points describing the company’s engineering innovations. But two of Landau’s examples show how engineering developments within the LMS were subordinated to business issues.
LMS management’s rejection of electrification proposals, because of insufficient return on capital, is unsurprising when neither the scheme nor the one linked London with a major city such as Birmingham. Also, the belt repair system to which Landau refers represented the development in Britain of “scientific management” techniques. As he indicates, this system had the business aim of reducing repair times and costs. Letter writer would agree in general with Landau’s observation that the Southern Railway was the most forward looking of the ‘Big Four’.
However, in my previous letter I compared the LMS not with its British contemporaries but with other European railways, which received more government support. Britain’s railways, including the LMS, did receive very limited government finance in the s. Landau does not address the question ‘Was the LMS too big?

In the game between Newcastle United and Sunderland, the match was abandoned as 40, spectators spilled onto the pitch. The 25 policemen present could do little to stop them from fighting, ripping up the goals and throwing missiles. Fishing stories With a county boundary largely defined by coastline and river courses, tales of fish and fishermen have always featured in our local newspapers.
SPRAT BOAT IN PERIL Considerable excitement reigned for a time on the beach at Aldeburgh about midday on Friday where the lifeboat crew mustered, expecting the order to launch to aid the sprat drifter Laura which was some three miles out, and beating to windward through a very rough sea in the strong and puffy north-west wind that prevailed. May 31st The East Anglian Daily Times reported on May 13th that the fishermen of Lowestoft had landed such a glut of mackerel that had never been seen in the town before.
Traditionally, Cornish fishermen had ventured as far as the North Sea to handle the mackerel harvest. How-ever, the new steam technology of the East Anglian boats had proved far superior, added to which, the Lowestoft fishermen worked 7 days a week, whereas the Cornishmen observed the Sabbath. Their success came at a price.
