This article provides an overview of neon lighting. Neon lighting is typically associated with lighted signs. Neon is similar to fluorescent lighting. Similar to Fluorescent Lighting Neon bears some similarities to fluorescent lighting. Like fluorescent, neon is a discharge source. The neon tube has electrodes at both ends, though they are different in construction. A fluorescent bulb has filament-like electrodes, but a neon bulb has sheet metal electrodes formed in various shapes, such as cylinders.

Although it operates at V, 50 Hz, some auxiliary electrical components are used to insert in this installation to support the tube light operational principle. The total electrical components for single tube light installation are Choke: Small neon glow up lamp Switch Wiring Diagram of Single Tube Light Installation with Electromagnetic Ballast How to Install a Single Tube Light with Electromagnetic Ballast From the junction box the neutral wire is not taken out to the switch board, rather it is taken out from the junction box and carried out to the port 2 of the tube light, as per figure above.
A wire already connects port 2 and pin 1 of the terminal 2. So the neutral wire is continued from port 2 to pin 1 of terminal 2. The live wire or phase is taken from the junction box to the switch board. The live wire is connected to the one terminal of the switch.

NEXT PAGE A fluorescent light does not have the usual glowing filament of an incandescent bulb , but instead contains a mercury vapor that gives off ultraviolet light when ionized. The ultraviolet light makes particles that coat the inside of the tube, and these particles glow or fluoresce see How Fluorescent Lamps Work for details. Fluorescent starters are used in several types of fluorescent lights.
The starter is there to help the lamp light. When voltage is applied to the fluorescent lamp, here’s what happens: The starter which is simply a timed switch allows current to flow through the filaments at the ends of the tube. The current causes the starter’s contacts to heat up and open, thus interrupting the flow of current. Since the lighted fluorescent tube has a low resistance, the ballast now serves as a current limiter. When you turn on a fluorescent tube, the starter is a closed switch.
The filaments at the ends of the tube are heated by electricity, and they create a cloud of electrons inside the tube. The fluorescent starter is a time-delay switch that opens after a second or two. When it opens, the voltage across the tube allows a stream of electrons to flow across the tube and ionize the mercury vapor.
Without the starter, a steady stream of electrons is never created between the two filaments, and the lamp flickers. Without the ballast, the arc is a short circuit between the filaments, and this short circuit contains a lot of current.
Resistant to shock and vibration Cool operation The voltage and current relationship for neon lamps is shown above. There is no current flow until the voltage reaches the striking voltage first peak. The current will increase it will depend on the impedance of the circuit and the voltage will drop to the operating voltage, which is the normal glow range of the lamp. Changes to the current will have little impact until you reach the next point and arc is created producing the abnormal glow region.
Listed below is the vehicle specific wiring diagram for your car alarm, remote starter or keyless entry installation into your Dodge information outlines the wires location, color and polarity to help you identify the proper connection spots in the vehicle.
A fluorescent tube circuit includes a ballast, wires, lampholders, and the tubes. Bulb vs Lamp Electricians usually refer to a light bulb as a lamp. On this page, we will refer to a fluorescent light bulb as a lamp or tube. Individual vs Common Ballast Wires Individual ballast wires each connect to a lampholder on one side of each tube. The common wire s connect to all of the lampholders on the other side of the tubes. Ballast Wiring Ballast Wire Colors Wire colors for individual and common connections on fluorescent ballasts will vary depending on ballast type, brand, and the number of lamps they support.
Ballasts have certain colors for individual wires to lampholders, and other colors for common wires to holders. Magnetic vs Electronic Ballasts Older magnetic fluorescent ballasts are usually wired in series. Newer electronic ballasts are usually wired in parallel, except for rapid start, programmed start, and dimmable ballasts.

If an engine has breaker points it will have timing marks. I usually remove the blower housing, find the timing marks and stick on a piece of reflective tape. An engine can be run for a short time with the blower housing removed. Some engines have a removable screen which exposes the flywheel. Manual start engines will need a rope or strap wrapped around the cup to start them with the blower housing and recoil starter removed. The link that I sent you has an upgrade for Kohlers, but can be installed on some other makes, that is partly solid state and uses the breaker points as a switch to trigger the spark in the solid state device.
The points can be easily set with a timing light and no longer need a condenser, the high amps that pass thru the points in a stock setup no longer happens, the solid state device carries the coil amperage draw, the points just trigger it. The points will stay in adjustment and last much longer. If the blower housing is attached to a cylinder head bolt s then the bolt needs to be retorqued before running the engine and after the blower housing is reinstalled.
Mad Mackie in CT I tried with an inductive that I borrowed this afternoon, connected it to my car battery, and hooked-up without the engine running spin hard! However, I’ve gone with a simpler solution that requires little effort – Magneto timing tool: Thanks for your help!

Neon Tube Installation Instructions *Warning do not reverse the polarity when wiring neon tubes as they will damage the transformer. Make sure you know which wire is positve and which wire is negative.
The tools your going to need to do this installation. These instructions have been designed with the “Novice” in mind, so if thats you, then please read-on carfully – its really not that hard. Do this by disconnecting the negative battery cable and laying it to one side of the car battery. It’s also wise to have your vehicles service manual handy for information about the specifics of the electrical system on your vehicle should you need them. Ok, lets get started.
So you want to install them permanently. For the interior, the best places to mount the tubes are under the dash on both sides just above where the feet go, but high enough so as not to kick the tubes or damage them. They also look very effective mounted under the front seats and towards the “back area” of the seats so as the light shines into the rear part of the car floor. The pic below shows the neon tube mounted under the drivers side dash. How to Install Interior Car Lights using 12v power from under dash – Step 3 Choose if you want your lights to turn on automaticaly when the headlights are turned on, or if you want to control the lights separately with a “toggle” switch.
If you want the tubes to light up automaticaly when the headlights are turned on, then you will now need to find a wire under the dash near the steering colum.

In such situation it is possible to use a neon indicator switch that has a lighted indicator when the switch is OFF provided the light itself is an incandescent bulb. Other types of bulbs may not work correctly with this type of setup. Your desired setup however is just the opposite. You want the neon indicator to be lighted when the switch is in the ON position.
It will not be possible to safely wire up a neon indicator when there is just a switch loop pair at the switch location. In order to get it to work the way you want it will be necessary to run a replacement power cable from the light location to the switch that contains a neutral wire in addition to the two wires for the switch loop.
When that replacement cable is in place the neon indicator is wired between the neutral wire and the switched wire that goes to the light fixture. You would also want to double check that the other wire at the switch is the hot line. If it is not then the light fixture itself is wired up wrong and should be corrected. Proper switch loop wiring feeds the hot wire to the switch and the return back to the light and then the opposite side of the light to the neutral at the light location.
This assures that when the light is off there are no live connections inside the light bulb socket.

Neon Circuit Testers. I haven’t seen stores calling these “neon,” just “voltage tester” or “voltage indicator.” But a neon circuit tester does use a small neon bulb plus a resistor inside it, which make it simple for you to check whether something in your wiring system is basically energized or not — and therefore whether it will probably work (and be unsafe to treat as if it were dead).
It helps you draw a diagram to properly install Neon and LED signs. As of October 15, , UL Underwriters Laboratories now requires that all remote wired channel letters be furnished with specific wiring instructions. This manual is not a how-to guide covering all aspects of high-voltage neon installations. This manual is a visual reference guide used to help avoid common mistakes in secondary wiring. It can also be used as a complement to other materials in learning the basics about definitions, parts, and different types of installations found within the sign industry.
This manual should not be relied upon as the sole source of information for high-voltage installations. At the time of printing, we believe the information found within is correct; however, codes and legislation change and that may outdate sections of this visual guide. The publishers or sponsors of this visual guide cannot be held liable for any damages or injury resulting from interpretations, or use of this manual as a basis for electrical installations.
